Duties of inventory clerk?

I had an inventory done after a tenant left, and on the basis of that returned the deposit. I have now discovered that the outgoing tenant had wrecked the controls on the oven but glued the control knob onto the front of it. The first I knew about it was when the incoming tenant tried to use the oven, and it didn't work!  It doesn't just need a new knob, but the function selector inside needs replacement.  £100 for the work plus £80 for parts.

I suppose that it's too much to expect that the inventory clerk has a duty to do a basic check on the oven and make sure it works?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Probably. Would you also expect them to check the functionality of everything else in the property? How long would that take?

    You hired this clerk yourself?

What did their Ts & Cs say?
What did your contract with them say?

    The contract went
Me: "Please do an inventory checkout ASAP"
    He: "OK, Thursday afternoon".

The job needs to be done with the usual skill and care to be expected of an inventory clerk. I was really just wondering what that entails?

I also wanted to have a little moan.

I see you regularly helping on this board and I've a lot of sympathy. I guess though, if the boot were on the other foot, would you not be suggesting that this was part and parcel of being a professional landlord (or whatever some of the other regulars like to call it)
I'm not sure I'd expect an inventory clerk to check things work though - I thought it was generally to have a good poke about? make sure things had been cleaned properly etc. I'm not sure I would have them checking the cooker, boiler etc.

@gdb2222 With appliances, the inventory report usually makes clear that it wasn't tested. It's usually limited to a visual inspection. An example -

How do you know that the inventory clerk made a mistake. Maybe the new tenant, unfamiliar with the controls, accidentally wrecked it and tried to blame the old tenant.
