Silent answerphone

Is there such a thing as a landline answerphone you can switch to silent. I can silence the ringing but not the greeting message or the person leaving a message.  I’m told it’s call screening but that looks like they have to say their name to be accepted. I just want to put the answerphone to silent.

Not sure I follow.  What are you trying to do?  Are you trying to set it up so the answer machine takes the call, you can hear "Hi it's Fred, can you pick up please?" and then take the call?

If you turn call screening off the phone will still ring and go through to the answer machine after x rings.  If you want a message that says nothing, just record a  custom blank one, though most units won't record a greeting until they "hear" something so you may have to tap something to get it to "hear" to record.

I think they want something where they can’t hear either their own message or the “hi, it’s Fred bit.” 

They don’t want to listen in to screen the calls, they don’t want to hear them at all.

OP, call screening is there by default. You should have an option to just turn it off.
