What is the approximate value of his estate and how much of that did he gift you after your mother’s death,? In case taper relief is applicable when did he make those gifts?
Very hard to say without valuing the house but I’d say the value of his estate when he passed was around £750,000 (house plus his money.) adding on what he passed onto my brother and I from my mum after she passed would be around £950,000 maybe just under the one million mark (just over £100,000 each approx but I need to check the figure) and this was given to us I think in late 2016.

This isn't MSE but given the value of the estate, would getting a solicitor to handle as much as possible, be money well spent if you're not in the "right place" for this?

I did lots of the legwork on my father's estate, but there were a few things that I really couldn't unpick and I handed those all to a solicitor + probate and paid their fees out of the estate.

I could probably have done it all and saved a couple of grand - but for me it was less stressful and so money well spent.

Thanks, as the total value of the gifts was under his NRB then taper relief does not apply, and as the estate would appear to be under £1M then there should be no IHT to pay as you have two lots of residential NRB on top of the standard NRB

The estate actually looks fairly straight forward so once you have the house valued you should be able to complete the probate without too much trouble yourselves. If you get stuck you will find plenty of help to any questions you have here.

Your mother left the whole of her estate (share in marital home and all other assets) to your father.

Your mother's unused NRB transfers to your father as does her RNRB.

Your father's NRB was reduced to £125,000 at death because of the gifts he made to you and your  sibling.

Therefore you can set two RNRB against the value of  your father's estate plus your mother's unused NRB plus the £125,000 remaining of your father's NRB.
