Ripped sofa

I bought a sofa in October 2020. I recently moved sofa to clean and noticed the seam underneath the arm rest had come away. I contacted the company who sent out an external technician who said it was down to wear and tear so the manufacturing warranty was not viable. We are two pensioners and the sofa is in a room where it is used only on rare occasions.  Where do I go from here. Help appreciated.

Exactly when was the sofa delivered?

You would need your own independent report to counter their argument that the fault is down to wear & tear. Who delivered the sofa and importantly brought it into the house and room where it resides. The seam could've been damaged during this process.

TBH, it's likely to be cheaper just to pay an upholster to comes out and make the repair.

You can go down the consumer rights route (as opposed to the warranty route) but you will need to get your own inspection arranged, hoping it results in a different diagnosis; that the fault was there at manufacture and not caused by wear.  You can then ask the retailer to address it.  They will presumably defend it on the basis that their technician says otherwise.

How did you pay?  If by credit card or on finance, you may be able to lever some support from the credit provider.
