Mortgage on a Dorran house (non standard construction)

Does anyone have any experience of obtaining a mortgage on a Dorran house? Or just general experience living in on? I’ve looked online but can’t find much (if any) info. Any help is appreciated!

Hi there we bought a Dorran 10 years ago, lived in it for 5 years before knocking it down (which didn't take much, just a JCB) and building again. We were not able to find anyone who would mortgage it however we did get a self build mortgage that started by lending us the value of the land the house was on.
We enjoyed living in it, biggest issues was draughty and did have condensation, plus we had a crazy anthracite boiler.
Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will try to help.
  • @Edgeoftheburn thanks for your reply! Good to hear from someone who has lived in one of the houses. Knocking down and starting again is something we have considered so very interested to hear about this from you. Are you able to tell me how it worked please? So did you have to buy the house outright and then get money from the self build mortgage or were they able to release money before buying the house? Also, how much of a deposit did you have to put up? This is one our main struggling points as we are only able to put up 5%.
  • We had to buy outright I am afraid, then we went through planning permission and only when we had that, could we apply for the self build mortgage. Was a long road hence the 5 years in the Dorran. Honestly you should keep saving as the Dorran route is not an easy option and certainly not less expensive in the long run.
  • @Edgeoftheburn I thought that might be the case! Yea, it’s just in such a good location, the garden is really nice and honestly the house itself wasn’t too bad either. If someone would have lent to us our intention would be to repair the house anyway but just no one will to take the risk which I understand. Thanks for your help anyway, I think we will just have to keep looking and see what else is on the market!

@Scottishgal94 totally understand our hearts over ruled our heads as we fell in love with the location. These houses are often build in wonderful locations. Good luck with your search and what is for you won't go by you 😄
  • @Edgeoftheburn so true! Thanks again 😊
