Bamboo

Hi
Can anyone please help me identify what type of bamboo are there?

  1. Specifically are these the shooting / running ones?
  2.  And what care does this need?
  3. Is it easy to remove these completely?
Thanks

They look like clumpers to me. If they've stayed your side of the fence and not pushed the patio up they probably are. No idea of the varieties.
How easy to dig up is subjective. A typical 7 stone weakling and a 15 stone weightlifter are going to have different opinions, especially if the latter has a mattock!  In my experience the clumpers don't go deep, but I used a moderately large digger to relocate ours!

Even clump forming bamboo will run, especially when cut back to ground level. I have broken two forks trying to dig out clumps of the stuff here. Whilst it is shallow rooting, it it still darned difficult to dig out. A mini-digger or stump grinder may be the better option(s) rather than trying to do it by hand.

The tool to use if you don't have a mini-digger lying around, is a mattock.

I've had quotes of £1K+ to remove some very well established clumps - Told them to .... off. Can hire a stump grinder for ~£75 per day..

Two very well established clumps that I want out. Maybe around 1m by 750mm each.

Well, he had some geotextile under the clump from when it was first planted. This would have limited the root spread and makes it much easier to dig out.
