UPS Courier asking for a late payment fee outside scope of Vat

I bought a synth from a German company and didnt see that I'd need to pay import tax (it was on the site, when I checked later, but small and not clear at point of purchase) When UPS delivered the item they wanted an extra £50 I said no, the item was returned and I was refunded.
Today I have had a letter from UPS saying I need to pay £4.28 late payment fee (outside scope of Vat) is this legal and do I need to pay?

German company does not need to tell you that you need to pay VAT, we are outside the EU now so it's up to you as the importer to know the law, which as they say ignorance is no defence.
As for the question then you still attempted to import goods so for £4.28 is it really worth fighting over?3 -

It’s not the retailer’s job to tell you that you’ll need to pay VAT - that’s for you to know and account for.0
