Reclaim money debited ?

Hi, I’m a compulsive gambler and this week deposited 3x £200 into a online casino. I’m been really struggling lattt etch with stress and anxiety leading to panic attacks and depression.  I’ve since found out this casino is fake with no chance of winning!
Today I looked at my online banking and they have taking £229 twice and £226 once. This adding up to £685 instead of £600
I’ve contacted my bank - TSB who’s card I used and they say there is nothing they can do. I said…so what if they took £10,000 instead of £600 and TSB still insist it’s my own fault 🤷‍♂️
Surely there must be a regulation stopping people from taking any amount when you think you know the exact amount you think is leaving your account. All monies were in U.K. pounds my end and in my casino internationally.
Can anyone help or give advice please?
Thank you

It’s likely that if they were based overseas, they were charging you in a foreign currency but converting to sterling for you to play in. The additional costs will be currency conversion fees, non-sterling transaction fees and the difference between whatever exchange rate the casino we’re using at the time you deposited.

you’re not getting a penny back from your bank, so the sooner you accept that, the quicker you’ll be able to move on.

speak to the bank about blocking gambling transactions, that should help you in the short term and maybe look at something like gambling anonymous and get help for your addictions.

    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)
  • I’m not believing they can charge me £29 to deposit £200 into their gaming platform. As I say, I’m a self confessed gambling addict and have deposited money worldwide into these gambling sites. Ive never ever experienced anything like this before though so it’s not “normal procedure”
    Thanks for the reply 👍

They can charge what they like as long as it's their T&C.  (within reason).

Ask the bank if they can disable payments to gambling sites.  Most can.

  • I would caution though, there was a similar thread to this and while the banks can block UK sites, with foreign ones, particularly if they aren't using the same sort of codes or whatever, they can still go through

I think you're conflating two different systems.

Gamstop only works on UK sites, as foreign sites are obviously not under the jurisdiction of the UK Government.

Banks may offer a gambling block but this is only effective if the site uses the Merchant Category Code for gambling.  However, a UK site could just as easily not use the right one as a foreign one.

Ultimately neither of these systems are going to be particularly effective if someone wants to gamble.  They need help to treat the addiction, not rely on third-party tools to prevent them.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting the OP relies solely on the banks’ facilities to stop them gambling but they can be a useful tool in limiting options but you are ultimately right in that if someone wants to gamble, they’ll gamble and the only way to address this long term is seeking some form of professional help.

As above though, it may well be exchange charges, so why don’t you believe the numbers?
