Help needed please

Hi,
I'm a long term reader of this forum, and now I'm hoping you can give me some advice.

My partner got me into a lot of debt regarding a gambling problem. I didn't know about this until it was too late and now have a CCJ against my name along with approx £20,000 worth of debt, this all happened whilst I was on maternity leave and now have a 10 month old baby.

I've now gone back to work, I work within a police force as staff and I'm required to be re-vetted as I've been there over 10 years. Work don't know anything about my issues and I know I need to tell them but I also know I'm not going to pass vetting.

I don't know what to do anymore, I'm getting advice via stepchange regarding the debts and his getting help for the gambling problems but this isn't going to help the vetting at work. If I lose my job then it is all going to be a lot worse.

Any advice please?

  • Forgive me in advance, I know nothing about police vetting but you’d be in better stead if you tell them when required and given the long committed service you do have employment rights. *Find out facts rather then panic*.
In the summer of 2017 I turned down a job because of credit checking concerns being the 5th year at the time of a DRO so it hadn’t quite cleared and it being connected to Insurance job offer - this past week turning up for an interview in the same building but different floor/different biz, I did feel a blast from the past lemon for not fully believing it was actually, probable get past able. I never truly found out did I.
Moreso when I came by a real historical thread on here when person had been newly bankrupt and actually got a job in insurance/hugely known regulated household name (at the time!) because they declared it at the right time. That was a decade ago and well before we’ve had the pandemic that will change life and perimeters for many. Can you get support from somewhere like victim support?
I’m sorry your partner did this to you and wish you well in getting past this.

You need to read your contract really, regulations about when you should disclose stuff like this.  Better to voluntarily disclose rather than them finding out.

Bit like the HMRC, dont tell them you have avoided paying tax on income and they find out - very naughty, disclose you havent paid tax due to oversight/life problems but here is some tax money - not so naughty.
