NHS digital data sharing opt out cut off date 23/06

As this is seems to be the NHS board these days
Just a reminder that you have until 23rd June if you want to opt out of having your NHS data shared anonymously with third parties.
NHS digital claim there is no cut off point for opt out and you can opt out later - while failing to explain that after 23/06 it will be too late as all your past data will by then already have been shared and so any later opt out will only affect new data from that date onwards.
I thought GDPR requires you to opt in as a conscious decision rather than be required to opt out where the default is to opt you in anyway - I suppose GDPR does not apply to HMG/NHS.
I f you want to stop the data sharing you need to send in a "type1 opt out form" to your GP. There seem to be various created versions floating round the web - who knows which is the official one.

Note carefully that a type1 GP data opt out is different from a national data opt out

  • And if you want to know how and why NHS Digital collects, analyses, publishes and shares data collected from GP practices for planning and research you can read about it here.

It applies to the government apart from in relation to national security, policing and a few areas. The point here is that the data is fully annonomysed, the reason they put the opt out in place is to have a way to deal with all the paranoid people and removing the risk of things getting tied up in the courts, rather than any and specific reason in law for them needing to.
  • Does anyone have problems on the website when trying to opt out online?

I can go as far as it says Send the code to your mobile after inputting my nhs number. It is even showing last 3 digits of my mobile number ok. But I never receive the code by text from them even after several retries. Trying this since last 2 days but same problem. May need to ring them tomorrow on 0300 303 5678 as this is the number it says after failed attempts to send me a txt message!!

Having been a twit and left this to the last minute, cannot now find the answer to the following -
Is a form emailed to GP dated today going to count as being before the 1st, or will I be too late -
and, I don't know how to fill in the tick-box & signature/date type MS Word fields :(

    Any help appreciated.

There seems to be nothing beyond "before 1 September". If you can't fill in something, print it off, sign and date it, scan it, and attach it to your email. I have no idea whether that will suffice, but it can't be less effective than doing nothing.

Thanks a lot, I had not thought of a scanned attachment, I can then at least ring surgery in the morning & doublecheck. Or they may say there is time to drop a form in in person I suppose - my own fault, either way, if not.

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

It’s all on hold again, so the 1st September deadline is no longer relevant
