    It was my thread that was linked to earlier. In our case, the properties in our area are highly sought after by landlords and first time buyers. 
    In our case we had several potential buyers that were prepared to enter a contract race. Some others wanted to offer more money in order to be considered without any competition. 
    Our estate agent (whose been entirely useless through the entire process) told us that a contract race was illegal, although it later turned out that it was simply that their computer system couldn't handle more than one buyer.
    Our conveyancer did have an additional charge to set one up and administer (about £250).
    In the end, we didn't do it as our current buyer promised to speed up and then our vendor pulled out.
    Because the English property system is an absolute joke.
