I've opened external drives up before and found that some either have a proprietry connector or the enclosure's board is actually the hard drive's board so it can only be used with that enclosure.
If the drive does come out, it's likely to use an IDE connector anyway if it dates back to 2005. If it was me, I'd pull it out and connect it straight to a PCs motherboard to get the data off. As I mentioned though, some of them can't come away from the enclosure's board.
Are there any labels on it that state the exact voltage it needs? Usually a label on the bottom of the drive will tell you the voltage and amps, then from that you can work out a compatible 4-pin DIN power supply with the correct voltage and current where the pins match up.0 -

Everything indicates a PATA/IDE drive inside that could be put into a suitable caddy.
