Historical rent on freehold property

I am in the process of buying a freehold property on an estate. My solicitor has informed me that there is a historical rent charge from 1986 and she cannot find evidence of it ever being paid.   The company who set up this charge is no longer trading. I am not too botheted about the amount but  I have been doing research and have uncovered horrendous stories whereby homeowners have had their freehold withdrawn and been forced to have a leasehold by the companies who have an interest in the property.  My solicitor has drawn up an indemnity  but that only covers future lenders. Has anyone had delt with a similar situation? The whole situation is quite bizarre and I am getting pretty worried about what has come to light any insight into this would be great Thank you.

    Could you speak to the vendors or other owners on the estate ?
    Without seeing the paperwork and trying to find out who is now responsible it would be down to your solicitor to sort this.

    How much is this rentcharge annually?
    ABSOLUTE worst case, how much is the total back sum that would be due? Most debts are only enforceable for six years after they're due.
