The former of you suggestions, same day exchange, staggered (slightly) completion. The scenario you highlighted at the end would be a right nightmare!0

I think the only issue you'd have with that is making sure the conveyancers understood what you wanted. I can see a lot especially cheaper "conveyancing factories" automatically assuming same date throughout the chain whatever you told them. So just check and double check.1

Thankfully I'm using a local solicitor who does this and other stuff, and I've been able to speak to him a couple of times, which I think will work on my favour for something slightly non vanilla.0
