This probably has to be one of the daftest emails from a CRA.

Titled "You've hit a milestone on your credit card debt", it then goes on to say, "You've paid off some of your credit card balance.  Nice work hitting that milestone. You’ve paid off some of your credit card balance over the past 6 months.  Head on over to see how this is affecting your credit factors, check where you stand now, and don't forget to celebrate all the progress you're making".

After getting myself in a right old financial mess a few years ago - see footer - I now use credit cards sensibly, paid off in full each month by direct debit, and have done so for about five years!

Just wanted to share simply because it had me shouting, "!!!!!! are you talking about?!"  in exasperation at my mobile!
Debt Jan 2008: £45,566. *** June 2013: DEBT FREE! ***
Paid back just under £50,000 due to some interest added.

I got the same email this morning, only paid of the minimum payment this month too! Nothing more than spam in an attempt to get people in and sign up to credit cards.
  • I have a "warning" on one of mine saying that I have a negative factor as I had previously gone close to my card limit. Oh no! Then you read the thing and it refers to ANYTHING over 50% of the card balance vs limit as going close to the limit! I was on 52% of my limit on a BT card for one month, the horror!

Clearscore is just as bad, I get almost daily emails from them in one way or another telling me how i can save money by applying for a credit card or personal loan, via the app.

Got tired of receiving those so turned them off.

I also got the same email this morning. Though in my case I had hit a milestone on my credit card debt so I thought that had triggered the email. Now it seems it was just coincidence!

Best is to pay in full every month or your rating looks worse, if YOU aren't clearing your credit every month in full then you need to get help before you end up in a DMP again

Had the same.  I don't have any "debt" and pay my cards off each month.  Last month I had a big bill paid on one of my cards which probably doubled my "debt" which when paid off in full made a big dent in it.

I got the exact same email today. And I was also in a big financial mess a few years ago. They still didn't give me a very high score, it's fair and apparently I still have some work to do. But unlike the time I got myself in a real financial pickle, now I have a proper plan and will be sticking to it. They did say congratulations were in order so I'll be celebrating a bit later with my tinned cocktail. (Pina colada, don't scoff!).

I'm going to go with ThisnotThat and turn off the notifications for Credit Karma and Clearscore (starting to feel like Clearscore are my best friends, they send a message just about every day). I know what I'm doing and so do you. But thanks for sharing because it's good to know that I'm not the only one being sent these messages. Which are a bit condescending, if I'm honest!

Don't worry about the score, it's meaningless, nobody but you ever sees it. The score is just a novelty, playing to the human desire to take one number and get it bigger, hence they sell you "improvement" services to increase the score they control - interesting eh? A score of 999 on Experian does not mean you are more or less likely to get credit, Experian can score you what they like, they don't lend money so it's irrelevant.
