SHOP DIRECT.. FINDING OLD ACCOUNT

Options
hi
Just wondering if anyone knows how long details of accounts and orders are held by shop direct.
Had a debt letter from an account opened in my name and old address in 2005 🤨 but i have never had any catalogue accounts or had any previous letters to the one i received today. Ive obviously sent them a status barred letter but would like to know exactly what was ordered from shop direct and what address the order was sent to. That way i can try and figure out who has opened this account as i have a gut feeling its a member of my family 😒.

Account details will only date back 6 years in most cases.

Also shop direct were/are notorious for not keeping paperwork, or getting credit agreements signed.

So you may have a number of avenues with which to dispute this debt.

OP is implying it's fraud from a family member if you read it, not trying to get out of paying debts that they legitimately owe. Disputing the debt by trying to use the tricks people try and use to avoid paying their debts is less of an issue as a dodgy family member.

The OP could go down the fraud path, but as a first step, its easier, and much simpler, for them to challenge the debt on the basis of, say, no credit agreement, or that the debt is statute barred, than it is to prove fraud has occurred.

Its very possible they could nip the whole thing in the bud now, just by using one or both of these arguments.

See what response the statute barred letter receives, if they deny time has run out to collect on this account, by say the invention of a phantom payment (quite a common trick), then a possible next step would be to either stick to your guns, and let them make the next move, or to ask for written evidence of your liability, in the form of a copy credit agreement.

Sending a SAR may end with the same results, but can take up to 40 days to process, In such cases the more strings you have to your bow, the better.
