That's what I pay for a service on my oil boiler.  Assuming they do a "proper" service and clean/replace everything that's supposed to be done, then I think that's a pretty fair price.

Is it safe to use local supplier instead of a big supplier as in the past i have used Scottish power?

As long as they're properly registered (Gas Safe Register or OFTEC as appropriate), then no problems at all.  It's easy to go to the GSR or OFTEC website and check that they're registered.  All other things being equal, you're actually better off going to a local supplier a lot of the time - they have a reputation to protect, and rely on word-of-mouth recommendations and repeat business, which the big suppliers often don't care two hoots about.

I would say it's prefered. The "engineers" (and I mena the quotes there) workign for the large companies are either under qualified or do not have the ability to run their own business. They earn muich less than an independant and the company they work for take a large chunk even thoug it costs more.

Of course there are bad independants, get some recomendations or at least look at the google (etc) reviews of them first. (and be prepared to igbnore useless exceptionally positive ones and rediculous bad ones).

I feel robbed! Our installer ( 5 doors away) charges £72.... should I ask for a refund of the £2?

We used to pay £80 to a local girl ex BG gas safe engineer in Surrey. I always thought that was good value, we built a good relationship with her and she would go out of her way for regular customers.
