Return postage on faulty goods

18 months ago I bought an expensive smartwatch. It recently developed problems so I got in touch with the manufacturer for advice. After a series of emails they concluded that the watch was faulty. They have advised me to return it and they will send me a refurbished replacement. However they won't pay the return postage and as I will need to add extra insurance due to the cost of the watch, this will leave me out of pocket. Does anyone know of any legislation that says they are liable to cover the cost?

Unless you bought it from the manufacturer then you're at the mercy of their warranty terms.

You'd need to return it to the retailer to be able to exercise your consumer rights.

I bought it from the Argos eBay store. I'd be happy to return it there for a refund but am concerned that they might only offer a partial refund as I've had it for 18 months... Can they do that?

Yes Consumer Rights  they can choose to repair replace or partial refund .
No legislation covers manufacturers warranty if a UK manufacturer.
They may also require an independent report on the fault .

It does say in the Argos eBay info that they don't do replacements, only repair or refund. I feel like it's better to take the cost of postage for a definite replacement from Garmin rather than hedge my bets with Argos.

That's what I'd do.  After 18 months Argos might only give you half the price back.
