Hi all, need to buy a new dishwasher as our 16 year old one has retired.

We want to be something that has a good energy rating, and I don't know whether we're just not understanding this properly, but the ratings seem odd? We've looked at a few now, and the figures seem strange.

For example:

Dishwasher A - £310 - Energy rating of A++
Annual energy consumption262 kWh
Annual water consumption3080 litres
Energy consumption per cycle0.94 kWh
Water consumption per cycle11 litres

Dishwasher B - £550 - Energy Rating of D

Annual energy consumption231 kWh
Annual water consumption2520 litres
Energy consumption per cycle0.81 kWh
Water consumption per cycle9 litres

Surely dishwasher B should have a better energy rating then A when it uses less water and energy overall?

We had the same thing recently when we were looking for a new fridge.
I think this might be because dishwasher A is using the old rating system and dishwasher B is using the new one. I think they brought it in last year it was getting silly with the number of '+' after the A rating on 90% of the appliances.

They've reset the grades, and the change is still filtering through.  As all new appliances were coming through in the A and above, they've pushed them down the chart and left room at the top for future improvements, rather than just add more pluses (after all, surely A++ is just as good as A+++?).  As per your example, the D rated appliance is more efficient than the old scale A++.

It seems silly to change the rating definitions, but continue to use letters. It will inevitably lead to this confusion. Should have made the new system a 1-10 scale, and left the old one as letters - just like they did with GCSE grades - so there's no confusion about whether we're talking old or new definitions.

Maybe it was a misprint. Tell us the make/model of the dishwashers in question.

    Dishwasher A was a Hisense HS60240XUK

    Dishwasher B was a SMEG DFD13E1WH

Information taken off Curry's, which I have noticed they do have the wrong information sometimes. These are just two of many we have looked at. The Hisense info may just be out of date in accordance with the new grades as said above, not many on there with A+ or more.

Anyone have any suggestions? Got a max budget of £400.

These ratings are probably only applicable for the "eco" program, which many find not as good as other programs for washing things. Do the ratings say how well they wash?
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Are you sure. According to the Currys page, the Smeg has an energy rating of F with annual consumption of 292 Kwh? PLus, it's only £359, not the £550 you mention. I think you were looking at a different make/model.

In other sites I've seen it has the older energy rating of A+.

Edit: I think you must mean the Smeg DF13TF3X. Also AO.com have the Hisense one listed with the newer energy rating fiche and that has a rating of E.

No, wasn't sure! I think you're right, it was the incorrect Smeg.  Seems a few places haven't caught up with the new grading yet then.

I think I'm just going to go with which machine actually use less water and Kwh. Is there a massive difference if one machine consumes 2800L per annum and another 3300L? I could probably do the maths, but I'm just being lazy!

Look at the energy rating detail - one of the categories is cleaning performance.  A machine might be engineered to spray the water in such a way that it does a better job, so even though its using less water, it can clean better.
