It seems to me that the cheapest way to listen to internet radio is to buy a cheap tablet,
. . . not if you already have a smartphone.  I use mine all the time when outdoors to stream radio programmes, mostly Radio 4, for which my bluetooth ear buds give good quality audio.  For indoor use I use a (dumb) bluetooth speaker (JBL Flip 5), which is pretty good for music as well as speech.

Tablets in general poor sound qualiy. Limited battery life if not mains connected. If so connected then better sound from smart speakers. Amazon tablet quoted by you is ok for the price. Smart phone sound on a par with tablets and a lot cheaper if you already have one so cheapest option. They and tablets can be usually plugged into hifi for much better sound if you do not need portability.

.......probably missed a few key qualities but maybe sums up the above posts......
  • If all you want is a radio try local gumtree or freecycle groups - you may pick up a cheap or free DAB radio with wifi?

If you already have an iPad I wouldn't worry about it running hot. If it does get too hot it'll switch itself off, but it should be ok up to about 95F (35C) and heat only becomes an issue if it goes over 100/40. To give it more chance, close apps down that aren't in use (close them not just minimise them), and reduce the brightness level to about 30%. Try to avoid using it when on charge as you'll have duplicate heat sources (CPU & battery) adding to the heat build-up. And make sure it has enough air circulation - don't use it trapped in cushions, quilts etc.

For sound quality the prev answers are right - forget its own built-in speaker and get an external Bluetooth speaker. Mine is about the size of my fist and cost £25, and changes the audio from unlistenable to just fine. The iPad sounds also pretty good when Bluetoothed into the hifi, so is (relatively) ok as an audio source.

I've no experience of that model but a few years ago I bought a small Panasonic bluetooth speaker for £19.99 and audio quality is surprisingly good.
Basically, almost anything is going to sound a whole lot better than the limited speaker they can fit into an iPad or smartphone so I doubt you'll be disappointed and for £25 it's certainly worth a try - especially since you can return it if you don't like it.
My bet is that you'll end up keeping it.

Thanks, I spent an hour or 2 looking at the reviews of cheap speakers on Amazon and that was the first that only had one off 1star review and that was because it was supplied faulty, so 1 faulty speaker in 500 didn’t seem bad to me.
