NFU - Home and Lifestyle Insurance 73% premium increase

Has anyone else had a problem with an unreasonbale increase in their premium and significant changes to excess details with NFU following a claim?
We have recently made a claim for storm damage. This required replacement of some shingle tiles to a wooden lodge roof. A job including labour that should have been easily less than £1000 which they paid the contractor £2656 for. I have queried this and they say there is nothing they can do to reduce the renewal premium because I made a claim....
We have our two dogs insured with them also on this policy; both have had a couple of claims (small amounts) this year which makes moving to another provider difficult as their pre-existing conditions won't be covered. The policy premium is now nearly £3k.
NFU have never been the cheapist but this is outrageous in my view.

You have made 3 claims on the policy in the past year so your risk profile will have increased considerably.  Perceived higher risk will result in higher policy costs.

The pets are clearly a problem because of the claims but whats the issue with the Home insurance? If you dont like their quote then shop around
  • Hi Sandtree, the pets insurance is linked to the home policy, sadly. NFU don't do just pet insurance.

Depending on the dogs' ages and what the claims were for have a look at Bought by Many. Not a recommendation but they have a policy that will cover pre existing conditions, subject to some restrictions.
Again depending on what the claim was for and the likelihood of  it recurring, could you consider self insurance for the dogs by putting   money away for use against future claims.

Been with NFU for some years.  Only goes up a little each time.

The policy premium is now nearly £3k.

That's not too bad.   Only a tad more than mine but then you have had three claims in a year.    Most people never claim. Some only claim once in their lifetime.   You have claimed three times in a year.   So, you are perceived high risk.

We have our horses/donkeys on a separate policy with NFU instead of combined with the house with NFU to avoid any rating from the animals being loaded onto the property.

I was about to suggest Bought By Many.  I moved to them ~18 months ago with a pre-existing condition.  As it's not needed treatment for 2 years, my dog is now fully covered.
