  • See if you have a local Buy Nothing Project group on FB.

Anything that I'm not sending to the charity shop (electricals, half empty tins of paint, nana's box of about a million buttons) I am giving away for free and people want EVERYTHING.   It's also a lovely way to help the local community and be a bit more eco-friendly than just binning stuff
Saves the trip to the tip too (especially during lockdown when slots for the tip went within minutes!).

In addition to FB we also used the Olio app as well to list things to give away, as you say good stuff might get used rather than ending up in the bin.

My local recycling centre is brilliant.  Clothes donation bins - an area for household to be donated and refurbished.

Very little went in the actual skips.

  • One other tip whether you use the packing service or not - which the movers WILL thank you for - space-plan where the furniture is going at the new place, so when the movers bring something in you can point straight to where it's going. They always comment that I'm really organised and they love me so I'm guessing people don't do this? And dither and have them move things around? I also blu-tack pieces of paper to the doors at the new place to label "Bedroom 1", "Bedroom 2" etc. Then I just stand by the front door as they unload and when they tell me what a box is, I tell what room to put it in and they can find the room easily. :)
We did this with masking tape and a thick black marker. Everything got labelled 'LIVING ROOM' 'MAIN BEDROOM' etc, or (for the white goods we left!) 'DO NOT MOVE - STAYING HERE'. Invaluable! Our new place got labelled up too. I think we've still got the notes blutacked on the door from  five months ago...

I moved last year and hiring a professional packer was the  best thing I did. My removal company packed it all with the rooms it came from. At the other end I wrote the room names on the doors. It was only about £200 to add to the move so well worth it.

We did a massively thorough Marie Kondo declutter and then had the removal company pack for us. It was the easiest move we've ever done and we were unpacked by the end of the day we moved on. We did declutter VERY thoroughly first though!  :D

Going to balance some of the opinions here.. the big difference is you're sorting, deciding to keep, deciding where as well as actually packing. Professional packers only do the packing. So they're not taking away the huge mountain you're feeling now, only part of it. You'll still have to tidy / declutter later.

To compare like for like, just blindly pack as well, it won't be nearly as time consuming.
