DRL faulty.
My son has a faulty DRL;...it will be fixed asap
but in the meantime is it illegal?
The rest of the unit (sidelight/headlight/full beam) is working perfectly.
eta: it's a '16 reg.

Probably, yes.
But if he turns his lights on, who'll ever spot it?0 -
He could run with his headlights on all the time which wouldn’t be a problem,... better than sidelights or no lights at all in daylight;... but it was a case of if he forgets and drives away with his single ‘auto-DRL’ illuminated is there a likelihood of being pulled up by the Rozzers, and if so, the likely implications?
Also, as an aside, is a faulty DRL an MOT fail or an advisory?

Just never turn the lights off? I don't, This even helps people see me from behind in heavy rain and fog unlike the rest of the people that don't seem to think lighting is ever appropriate ;-)Yes MOT fail, if car 2018 onward. But dont' expect anyone to know that, most think it is is they are "fitted" from new. (and hey I may be wrong!)0 -

(and hey I may be wrong!)That’s the issue really;...he leaves the switch in ‘Auto’ which means the DRL’s illuminate immediately and the headlights will come on automatically but only when the light fades. The only time he ever really touches the light switch is to put the headlights on manually if it’s raining etc and it’s not dark enough for them to illuminate automatically.
Interesting, and unusual, about the MOT;..his car is 16’reg, btw.

If people used their lights properly, DRLs would be redundant.
Front-only DRLs have to be the most pointless piece of technoguff this side of the electronic handbrake. If conditions are such that having lights on the front helps your car be seen, why doesn't it need lights on the back to do likewise?
And that's before we get near the people who drive at night on their front-only DRLs because they can see and the dash is lit...but it was a case of if he forgets and drives away with his single ‘auto-DRL’ illuminated is there a likelihood of being pulled up by the Rozzers, and if so, the likely implications?
Probably a 14 day defect rectification notice. How likely? How bored are they? Also, as an aside, is a faulty DRL an MOT fail or an advisory?
If the car was first reg on or after 1st March 2018, it's a fail.
If before, it's not a fail, but the tester would almost certainly choose to advise.

DRL do not need the switch to be in auto to come on. They will illuminate as soon as you turn the car on.Biggus_Dickus said:That’s the issue really;...he leaves the switch in ‘Auto’ which means the DRL’s illuminate immediately and the headlights will come on automatically but only when the light fades.

FWIW, a friend has been driving around in his Hyundai i30 with one broken LED DRL for years now.
Not an MOT fail, so he's not interested in fixing it.0 -
Disconnect the other until it's sorted.

He's not interested, doesn't care that he's driving around in a 'cyclops' car.oldagetraveller1 said:Disconnect the other until it's sorted.0
