Thank you for all the feedback.
My grandparents bought the family home years ago.  I don't know what the financial arrangements were after my granddad's death, but if my uncle had not looked after my nan it would probably have gone to pay for her to go into a home years ago, and there would be no house to sell now anyway.
But such is life.  It is not uncommon for families to show their true colours upon a relative's death.  I will try to pass on some of this information to my uncle in order to aid him in making sure he is still secure while he grieves.

Did granddad leave a will? Or was his estate dealt with under intestacy rules?
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

It doesn't help OP but lots of others lurk and read these threads so well worth noting that the grandmother could have drawn up her will to allow the son concerned to stay in the property if she wished. It probably would have meant the other sons would have had to wait and their children (rather than themselves) would have inherited eventually.

We don't know the size of the estate or whether this son could buy his brothers out. It's possible that he'd have enough to buy a small property himself. If he's lived at home for many years, he might have saved. 🤔

I've read the threads about older couples selling property and moving into social housing. I'm surprised at that. It wouldn't happen here. Locally, social housing for the elderly (when available) is more likely to go to people willing to downsize from social family sized accommodation. It's worth a try for the uncle asking for LA help but I think it depends on the postcode. If he has an inheritance, possibly a job or company pension then he's able to find alternative accommodation without help and would be way down the pecking order in my area.

Just to follow up on this . . .  my uncle has been given a deadline to be out of the house.
He has pension money plus he will get his 20% share of the house.  He has tried to find somewhere, originally to buy, but as time ran out to rent.  But has been unsuccessful.
So it seems like next Friday he will officially become homeless.

Has he spoken to Shelter? Has he registered with the local authority's housing register? Usually the local housing associations use this to fill their properties, and this may well include sheltered house / properties for the over 50s. Although the waiting list is in some cases never-ending, in this age range there is at least a regular turnover. Shelter will know what the situation is in his area.

(I have a friend in a mixed development: most units sold but a few rental only, and of the privately owned units many are then rented out. They have a lot of empty flats at the moment.)
Signature removed for peace of mind

Okay, thank you, I'll let him know.  It can be very difficult to help someone in this situation, as they sink into despondency and then don't have much energy to help themselves.

Yes, an offer was accepted on 21st October, and on 6th November was Sold STC with draft contract.
One of his brothers is the executor, and he arranged with the solicitor that they send him a Notice to Quit.  This was sent on 29th October.

He really should talk to Shelter ASAP. It is not easy to actually evict someone without a court order and the general advice if you have nowhere else to go is to stay put. If you leave of your own accord then you won’t get help with being rehired by the LA.

Are the other brothers offering him any help at all - whether practical or financial?
