American rescue plan

Options
Hi, I am asking this question on behalf of my mum who has recently received a cheque from the Rescue plan as she used to live and work in the USA and receives a small pension. The problem is that her bank doesn't accept foreign cheques. Apparently the IRS don't do electronic transfers..? What can we do?

Does she know anyone in the US she trusts to deposit the cheque into their own account if she signs it over to them? You'd have to verify that it is possible to do that in the US. Then they wire transfer money to her in Sterling. Of course, she'll lose any associated fees with doing that, but it may be a possibility.
How does she receive the pension?

I use Santander for US cheques - they send it to their f.ex dept. and it takes two / three weeks to show in my account, but for the four times a year I need the service, it's good enough.
  • She doesn't have anyone over there anymore unfortunately. Her pension is paid directly into her account. She Banks with Cooperative bank. My mum is 81 years old. I am thinking of opening another account to deposit, that might work? It's so difficult to contact anyone there aswell. I have managed to find a way to send a message but I'm still waiting for a response. Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

My mother also received one of these cheques (a nice surprise too!).
Consider opening a new bank account with someone else. For example, my mother is with Natwest who readily accepted the cheque. Be prepared as it may take a few weeks for the funds to appear in her account.
