Hotel cancellation policy check

Hi,
I'm looking to reserve a hotel in a (currently) amber listed country in the hope that by August it will have moved onto the green list.

The hotel i'm interested in is part of a reputable chain and offers a 'free of charge cancellation right up until 2 days prior to travel' policy. Having read a lot of advice online regarding making sure you're properly covered in the event of cancellation i want to ask opinions on whether this policy is good enough to act as financial protection or whether there's more i need to do to ensure i get a full refund if for some reason we can no longer travel.

The policy appears in both the hotel's email containing the quote, and in the quote itself:

Would you say this was safe to book then with regards to me getting a full refund if i cancel before 2 days prior to travel?

Thanks

ps: the same hotel is also available through booking.com with the same cancellation policy given, although price is slightly lower when going to the hotel directly.

If you book directly then which countries laws are you operating under? (Booking.com is dutch).
    Is it more than £100?

"whether there's more i need to do to ensure i get a full refund if for some reason we can no longer travel."

    Do you have travel insurance?
The hotel policy obviously won't cover you after the 2 day deadline, whereas travel insurance will for some circs e.g. death of a close family member.

    The hotel is in Croatia
Is what more than £100? The hotel cost is approx £3000.

If the bill is more than £100 then you are covered under section 75 protection if you pay on a credit card. This means if the hotel went bust or didn't provide the service for some reason then they credit card company would be liable. This is a statutory right.
There is also a chargeback scheme but that is voluntary.
However that only applies if the hotel doesn't provide the service. It's not for YOU cancelling.

You also need travel insurance in case you need to cancel e.g. your illness or death/illness of a family member.

Are you getting flights as well? You would be better off booking a package if you are worried about protection. If you didn't arrive for some reason and the hotel offers the service the you may not be protected if you booked seperate flights.

Your best bet is package holiday, travel insurance and credit card.
