Is this a reasonable request?

So my employer has asked me to use my personal car to move stock to another location so we can start the shift with adequate stock.

I did query if I would need business insurance but a response was not forthcoming.

So do I need business insurance?

Yes you would require business insurance as it is over & above commuting.

It's agency work so doubt there is much point complaining otherwise will be replaced

As agency staff, you ought to have business insurance as a matter of course.  'Commuting', on an ordinary policy, generally covers travel only to a single, fixed place of work.  Travelling to different workplaces, as agency workers tend to, counts as business travel.

It will be fine if they aren't any problems whilst out.  It is still driving without insurance if the motor policy doesn't include travel in connection with work.  In the unlikely event of being stopped by the police it will be uninsured and incur a 6 point penalty, a hefty fine and impounded car.

what about people who use their car to help their friends move? technically speaking, this is not for social and pleasure either though?

Yes it is, unless they are being paid... most insurers won't count being paid in beer as payment. You are being social with your friend... wont be a pleasure if you have to heft a washing machine up/down stairs though.

As to the original question, because you are carry stock with you even business class 1-3 may not cover you and instead you'd need commercial insurance similar to couriers.

Do you work in car insurance?
I suspect that most agency workers (employed on PAYE basis) do actually tend to work at single locations for some time - I spent 6 years working at one - but even if I had worked at a different one each week I would not have thought related travel to get me there required "business use" insurance.

'You guess' - and that just about sums it up. However carefully OP might drive, there are plenty of idiots on the road...and producing insurance documents is mandatory if you're involved in an accident where someone is injured.

Not a risk worth taking. OP, give your insurer a call and ask if you can have the journey added to your policy as a business trip (explain what you're doing/why) - unlikely you'll be charged any extra on your premium if it's a one off.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

I don't work in car insurance but I have done a little but of traffic offence processing in my time.  I have also been an agency worker and spent my weeks at various places: a few shifts in a factory followed by waitressing at weekends.  It paid the bills.  I needed business insurance for that.  I've still got it now, incidentally, as it's no more expensive than SDP plus commuting.
