Just sold an item at £4
    Postage is £3.99
Using the new payment system, fee's came to a total of 0.81p
Are you sure? Should be £1.32 assuming you are a private seller not business.

Old fees would have been 80p to eBay and 53p to PayPal.
I think he means that it sold for £4 which was including postage.   Ebay fees on £4 would be 81p  which is 12.8% of £4 +30p.   I am guessing he did not charge extra for postage?
Then if that is the case they should have checked the postage costs better before listing!

I agree with you.   I think he has not taken the postage costs into account.  Also I would add the commission charges to the postage cost.  So if the postage was going to cost me £3.20, I would add the 12.8% to it and charge the buyer anything between £3.50-3.80.  Because really the postage cost to the seller is not just £3.20 - it is £3.20 + ebay commission on it.

I do the same, my usual postage cost is either £3.50 for small parcel or £1.75 for large letter depending on the item, that allows something for the fee and the packaging to leave the £3 or £1.53 for Royal Mail.

It's quite simple to work out how much the fee will be when selling so I cant understand people who complain simply because they have not done thier homework first.  The fees are clear to see and if you want to run the risk of selling something for 99p then it's not worth the time. But to complain afterwards because you have not thought it through is pointless.
I start my auctions at the minimum I will accept to give me a reasonable mark up. If they don't sell then I relist until they do. I would never risk letting something go for 99p,there is no point.
