Not quite so generous. £15 spend needed for £5 cashback, and Max 5 retailers this time

Last time I spent at a petrol station in our village which was on the Amex map, I was supposed to get cashback but didn't receive anything...

Send them a message on the app - I had a chat and they sorted me when one was missing as they can easily check it. Worth it for a few minutes on chat.

First of all they slash our cashback rates, now they've made the shop small offer less generous. For other products I would happily switch to another provider, but when it comes to rewards credit cards there's not really any competition with Amex so we all just have to bend over and accept it.

I think 'slash' is a bit of an overstatement, it's no more than £25 less a year. And on the flip side, I'm getting deluged with retailer offers again, quite a few of them useful and also stackable with TCB/discount codes.

It could easily have been a lot worse - one can only assume that Amex are still aggressively pursuing market share - which also explains the constant referral incentives. Latest one I'm seeing is £50 for me, £40 for the person being referred - that's pretty healthy if you know people that are interested!

So... glass still half full, chin up  B)

Once in a blue moon there's a decent retail offer, but 99% of them are either for high end hotels (spend £500 at Mandarin Oriental, get £100 back), high end shops (spend £500 at Bicester Village, get £50 back), or tat no one has heard of (like Pasta Evangelists or English Cheesecake Company), all of which I've no interest in.

To be fair, most credit card rewards are pretty stingy these days but for a free card I think Amex is pretty good. I mainly use it to boost Avios, but Shop Small (now occuring for the 3rd time since August 2020) and cashback offers (I made good use of 7% at Morrisons (on top of 15% colleague discount) are reasonable incentives.
