You could also take your ex house "mates" to small claims court.
They obviously don't care about you.

Is it just your name on the account? If so there is no point keep calling to ask if anyone else has paid the bill. The company aren't interested in anyone else. If it were me I would either ask the company for a payment plan that I could afford, or wait until the company contacted me and then ask for a payment plan. I would give up asking others to pay.. they aren't going to.
