Keys on almost new phone cracking already, anything we can do?

Options
My boyfriend has recently gone self employed so decided to get himself a contract phone for the first time.

He got himself a sony ericsson w580i from carphone warehouse (on orange). He doesnt use it that much and in the past 2 months of ownership has probably sent about 300 texts and made a handfull of calls.

Now the problem is that the keys are very flat, and now appear to be very thin. As every single one of them has cracked. The underkey lighting now shows up on every key and its getting harder to use. For example when you press the key it doesnt always actually click down, it justs makes the crack worse.

Is there anything he can do? He didnt take out the insurance as we didnt think hed need it!

I know you guys know what your talking about? So should we be covered with this being a manufacturers fault? Hes never dropped it etc, and the rest of the phone is in perfect condition. Its not even like he presses the keys very hard, it seems like the keys are just very weak!

Any suggestions anyone?

its a common known fault so should be able to repair under the warranty, i know orange would if you got the phone direct through them, take it to cpw its their responsibility to fix it,

i only had 1 key crack, but took it into CPW to have a chat.

They took it, bagged it, fixed it within 2 weeks (1.5 really), it looks like they replaced the keypad, but it seems fine now. PS i don't work for them! and i didnt take the £50 'courtesy phone'

I completely forgot to update this but CPW have said its a known problem and they will fix it free of charge. Apparently the first version has weak keypads but the second version are fine. They will put a nice new second version key pad in for us :)

I read about this on various review sites, yet when I asked in Carphone Warehouse they knew nothing about it. I decided against buying that phone. Having said all that, I understand that you should get a repair free of charge, no problem.

yep had the same problem with my daughter's W580i - 3 keys cracked and wouldn't charge - took it back to P4U on the 29th day and they sent it away for 'repair' - 3 weeks later the phone (not sure if it was new or not tbh) came back and daughter happy.

2 weeks later, the doorbell rang and there was the postie with a parcel to sign for. Couldn't remember ordering anything but I signed for it anyway.

Lo and Behold, another W580i !!!!

So I now have one happy daughter and one happy hubby (he normally gets our cast offs).

Obviously I'm not going to say anything to P4U - will just hope that they don't realise their mistake and ask for it back haha :T
