Mot advisory

I've been told my 2014 fiat panda has advisories on my MOT:
Shock absorbers has slightly worn bush nearside rear upper & the same on the offside rear upper.
Since then my car does make a slight clunking  noise when going over bumps. My steering is fine and my brakes are spot on.
How much will it cost me to replace these advisories with parts and labour?

Did you ask the MOT garage, or do they not do repairs? Parts are approx £30 per side and say, an hours labour per side to replace.
  • Google your nearest motor factors and price up replacement shocks. As above, no more than an hour’s labour to swap them @ about £80, there’s your total.

Pretty much every car on the road is going to have a "slightly worn bush" in its suspension components but that's no reason to rush out and have them changed.  I'd bet you also have 'slightly worn' tyres and brakes.  Most cars do, because that's what wearing parts tend to do . . . wear.

If the "slightly worn bush" was dangerous then the MoT test would have failed.

Have them changed if you wish but unless you do very little mileage you can probably expect the same advisory from next year's MoT test.

It's a common complaint on the Panda. The mounting bush in the end of the shock breaks down, usually it's the top one and that causes a double clunk over bumps and humps.

If you open the tailgate and get someone to bounce the back end and just look across the top of the rear wheel, you'll see the top shock bolt. You'll see the shock mounting "eye" will slap about in relation to the bolt holding it on.

If it's a standard Panda and not a 4x4 the part number is 51955345 and replacements can be found for as little as £15 a side.

They are really simple to replace, just two bolts each side, they can be swapped without even taking the rear wheels off.
