EFFECT ON EYE VISION

Options
Hi Folks
Do you know anyone who tested positive also saw a decline in their eye vision?
I recently tested positive and now also seeing a decline in my eye sight.  However, I do wear glasses normally but do you think it has something to do with the pandemic or am I being paranoid?
Thank You

In a small number of cases it appears vision problems can be an indicator of Covid but any ongoing effects seem to be very rare - increased screentime during lockdown causing eye strain is likely to be more of an issue

Yes a year on, I still often get blurred vision and very watery eyes, and struggle to focus  Had new glasses July and have booked another test for next week.  Two family members in their mid 20's have also had to start wearing glasses and one in their early 40's also has had her prescription changed 10 months after having COVID.  None of these have had increased screen time through any lockdown as they have continued to do their normal job, in their normal place of work.  It seems to be one of the long term effects.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

My eye prescription has changed despite never having had Covid, as far as the regular  LFT have indicated.
Perhaps some evidence aside from anecdotal family members could be provided?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

If you haven't already, you could sign up to the 'Zoe' symptom tracker which is  run by people doing a lot of research into Covid and its effects - https://covid.joinzoe.com/  Their website has a lot of information about symptoms and after effects and if you are a participant there are regular opportunities to submit questions which they try to address.

One of the the things that Covid seems to do is to cause (usually mild) damage to organs and tissues so it's not completely out of the question that it might affect eyes, but of course eyesight does change and often deteriorate over time and with ae in any event so it's equally possible that the change you've noticed is perfectly normal and unrelated to Covid.
I think many of us are much more acutely aware of even minor changes in anything relating to our health because we're consciously looking for them, due to Covid, so it's also possible that you're more aware of things that are a bit different than you would have been pre-pandemic.

Have you asked your optician? They may well be able to set your mind at rest, and double check that there's nothing serious going on.

It has been suggested that the eyes can be a route for the virus to enter the body as reported in this paper here. More details in the pdf link on that page.

we find compelling evidence that ocular cells can be readily infected with SARS-CoV2

Eyes, nose and mouth are common entry points for respiratory diseases (not just covid) - don't touch your face before washing your hands

Fair enough, but does this imply vision impairment takes place, or is permanent if it does?
I was clever enough to damage my vision last year and my ocular acuity was impaired for a while in the affected eye, but it was back to normal in just a few weeks.

I don't think it does imply that. It was just that I was browsing it over the weekend and was reminded about it by the OPs question. Thought I would just add the link for interest on the topic of SARS-CoV2 and eyes. People can make of it what they will.
