I haven't got a clue about these and would be grateful if anyone can tell me if this meter is compatible for use with an EV tariff offering off-peak and peak pricing.  Many thanks!

TBH any smart meter should be capable of multiple rate pricing it's really down to how the supplier records and uses the data - that's how the Octopus Agile pricing works.

Consumption data is collected in 30 minute chunks together with the time and the supplier collects the data and works out the price.

All smart meters have the ability to collect data in 30 minute intervals - it's down to whether the supplier wants to collect and process it in small or large chunks and has tariffs to suit. Most dont because it's either too much hassle, they dont have the infrastructure or tariffs to warrant it.

I can use my IHD to interrogate my four year old smart meter and determine my consumption in one hour intervals for up to 24 hours or daily consumption for the past month or monthly consumption for the past 13 months but my supplier doesn't collect any of it so I have to send in a reading once a month.

  • Yes, it is a SMETS 2 meter that has 4 registers. Most suppliers will bill using the R1 and R2 registers; however, Octopus uses a single register with billing for all its ToU tariffs (including Go/Go Faster and Agile) based on 48 by 30 minute usage which the meter also records.

The fun part comes when you want to read the different registers on those meters

Yes, seeing that photo gave me flashbacks. I retired before they became too widespread, fortunately. I remember trying every combination and duration of button press I could think of and still not managing to get the two readings. They did eventually put out some instructions but I never saw another after that.
