Import VAT on a gift coming in from EU

Can anyone help with how to avoid the Import VAT on a gift coming in from Denmark?  Seems grossly unfair to have to pay nearly £33 to ParcelForce to get a parcel which was actually a birthday gift

Don't have it come from outside the UK
  • It was a birthday gift coming in from Denmark and involved a £20.90 import VAT cost and £12 clearance fee.  What I am looking for is help, does anyone know what the value is before they charge you import VAT or is it import VAT on anything no matter the value?

The threshold is value of goods of less than £39. That VAT charge would indicate that your goods had an ex VAT value of £104.50, which means VAT is payable. False or incorrect declarations will involve ignoring of the valuation peovided and a correct or higher valuation being applied.

Import VAT is a fact of life, it is morally and legally wrong to attempt to evade it.

What's "grossly unfair" about it?  It's a perfectly lawful and reasonable tax, why is it unfair just because it's a gift?
  • The person who sent you the gift could have ticked a box to indicate that they would be responsible for all charges - but they clearly didn't.
  • Thank you for all the comments. I maybe did express my question very well but was not wanting to avoid or do anything fraudulent I merely wanted to know what the threshold was and I thank the person who answered that question.
I must say I found that for a first time question on this forum I found some of the answers received a bit harsh and I will not be asking  anything again.
However I thank MattMattMattUK for an explanation, all I wanted, and grateful for the link etc.

I can't see anyone giving harsh replies to someone asking how to commit tax evasion.

but was not wanting to avoid
But that is exactly what you asked.
I merely wanted to know what the threshold was
Which you didn't ask in your first post.
