    I believe she should speak to council to see what they say also.
    Very nearly zero point in doing this. While she has a home already the council won't help. If she sells up the council will expect her to use the equity she has to fund a private rental - the equity will also reduce or eliminate her access to financial help from the council.

    Only after the equity has been reduced to the relevant threshold will there be help with the rent - at which point she'll have said goodbye to the equity needed for a deposit if she decides to buy again in the future. Trying to hide the equity would be fraud.

    So staying in the existing property should be the priority if at all possible.

    On which point, hazyjo's question "Were they married?" is the one which really matters here.
