Am I being thick? We have recently signed up for Avro Energy via the energy club. In yesterday’s newsletter it says ” Cheapest 1yr fix. Avro - 1yr fix. Rate (not price) is locked in for 1yr” What is the difference between rate and price? I don’t want to get a huge increase in cost in a couple of months.

Your direct debit is not your bill.
On a fixed energy tariff the rates you pay for gas and electricity do not change for the length of the fix.  However you are charged on a per unit basis, so if yo use more gas, your gas bill is higher.  Likewise for electricity.  What you pay per month is not all you can eat.
  • Hi,
rate and price (per unit) is same thing.
Fixed means that unit rate/price wont change.
Lets say unit rate is 10p, you told Avro you use 10,000 annually, so £1000.
Avro will divide that by 12 for monthly DD, so so about £83 a month.
After a few months of you providing regular monthly readings they notice that your usage will be 12,000, so, £1200 for the year, they will adjust your DD to £100 a month, or higher.
Provide regular monthly readings, keep your own wee spreadsheet, to keep your eye on usage and payments.

As above:  Rate and price per unit do not change for the duration of the fix.  Price you pay for energy used will depend entirely on how much you use, of course it will.  Say baked beans are £0.50 per tin so you buy one, you pay £0.50, you buy ten, you pay £5.00.

I honestly don't mean to sound patronising but that really is it.  The rate you pay per litre for petrol/diesel is fixed; how much you choose to put into your tank is up to you.

If your usage turns out to be significantly higher or lower than Avro imagined when they set your DD amount, there will be a day of reckoning down the line:  Either your DD will increase if your payments have proved insufficient to cover your usage or they will owe you money/reduce your DD should your usage be much lower than your credit balance.  HTH.
