Strange behaviour by estate agent

We had that on our current house, when we finally got a viewing the agent was trying to put us off "its a bit small isn't it, needs quite a bit of work", they also were very reluctant to pass our offer on the vendors but I told them they had legal obligation to! I think someone in the office or related to wanted to buy it but wasn't able to get their mortgage in place fast enough or something. Agents are usually pretty desperate to sell houses asap so seems very odd.
