I think my daughter has a CIFAS marker?

  • Thank you everyone. I'll pass this on to my daughter.
As mentioned she's currently using a Pockit card, the problem is there a limit to how many transactions she can make before the card is temporarily locked. Being a person who spends little and often this can happen quite frequently.

Perhaps she needs a different type of prepaid card with different limits, I think I'm right in saying they don't do CIFAS checks on some prepaids card, that's how she got the Pockit card.
Any suggestions on prepaid cards, one that caught my eye was Optimum.

Lastly I've never done a credit check on myself, never felt the need to do so. It would be interesting to see what my daughter's credit score is like. Does doing a credit check leave a mark, are there checking companies that don't leave a mark?
    Thanks in advance

People can check all their own credit files for free: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/check-free-credit-report/

Such checks involve soft searches. Soft searches are not visible to lenders.

If she spending a little and often can she not just pay day to day transactions in cash?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I am not really familiar with pre-paid cards, except for the Tesco ClubcardPay. No idea whether you can get this card if you have a CIFAS fraud marker but I know it is free to use for unlimited daily transactions. Also free to load by bank transfer.

But I thought all prepaid cards offer UK payment transactions for free?

There's a bunch of other prepaid cards: https://www.money.co.uk/prepaid-cards#prepaid-card-deals

There are limits in and out of the Pockit account.
She's not very good with money
Her wages goes into my account. If I send all of it to Pockit  she'll spend it too quickly.
If she goes into a shop she can spend cash but much of her spend goes on things online and Uber cabs.

The CIFAS marker has certainly learned her a lesson, she now needs to learn about budgeting.
That's for her to learn and she's learning the hard way.

  • You can run checks as people mentioned above, or get in touch with the banks and explain the situation. Some banks may offer a limited basic current account, such as Virgin Money M Account or Nationwide FlexBasic, which is literally a bare bones current account with a large amount of restrictions. As she slowly builds back trust with them, they may start to allow her to apply for other products.

Six years have past since my daughter was awarded a CIFAS marker on 5th March 2019.
She gave it an extra month and last week she made a DSAR request and yesterday she got this reply.
As of the above date, there is no Cifas data on our systems registered in your name and date of birth at the address(es) you supplied.
So today she applied for a Monzo current account and was turned down, then she tried with Revolut and the account was opened and was instantly closed.

Any ideas on what she can do next.
All she wants is a straight forward bank account with direct debit and standing order facilities.
    Overdraft facilities are not required.

    Thanks in advance

Were Monzo or Revolut banks she had accounts with when the was given the CIFAS marker, or did she apply for accounts with them whilst she had the marker?

FlexBasic Nationwide? Or Basic with Halifax, Barclays or Natwest?

It's not a great idea to do at this stage plus you can't apply directly for any of these basic accounts anyway.
Given the above info, she is almost certainly still in some kind of fraud databases.

I would suggest waiting three full calendar months (July 2025) to allow databases to be updated etc; if still declined after that then she'll probably need to dig deeper such as SARs to places like Synectics and National Hunter
