Thanks I didn't know that.sheramber said:your National Insurance number is issued from the child benefit claim. It is nothing to do with the school.
The name for the child benefit claim is checked with the Register of Births, which would be surname A.
Can Contributions Agency ( note not HMRC who deal with tax and do not deal with NI numbers) ,not change the name on your National Insurance number. They can do it when you marry so sight of your birth certificate should be enough.
I was always told it was because that was the name that was changed at school.
Remember we are going back to a time when technology isn't what it is now....lol
Why should I need to change anything when it not a legal requirement and I have given them sufficient documents ?
What if I had been living abroad most of my life (and maybe applying from there) I wouldn't have a HMRC letter.I think Sheramber has given you a possible way forward.I would be contacting the Contributions Agency (if that is the right place) to get my name changed on my NI record. This mismatch may (or may not) cause an issue when you get to state pension age anyway. You may feel you don't need to change anything when it's not a legal requirement and you have given them sufficient documents (and I can sort of sympathise with that attitude) but it seems you are not going to get your passport without some more action from you.

You don't need a solicitor to make money out of you, telling you what isn't a legal requirement and complicating the problem to no avail.Bulld0g said:smudge56 said:Firstly.
What name do you use on a daily basis.? Eg what name does everyone know you as.If it’s A. Your birth name, then make sure you have all your documents in That name . The stat dec should give the story of how you mother changed your name at school and you were known for a while by that name but you now have reverted back to your birth name.
If you now use name B then all your official documents should be changed to that name. The passport won.t be issued until you have done this. You appear to be using two identities which is why your passport will not be issued. HMPO are only following their guidance and no matter how many complaints you make, you will still have to decide which name you are using and change everything to that name and give them evidence that you have done so.
If they are not happy with the stat dec for your change of name you can make your own change of name deed stating that you have changed your name from A to B, sign in both names and get someone to witness it
I wished I could have afforded the solicitor to deal with this for me as he knew what he was talking about but I just couldn't afford to have him carry on .
Smudge knows exactly what he is taking about.
Obviously you need to do what it takes to eliminate name B completely, if necessary certifying that with a statuary declaration, if you want to have your passport issued.Evolution, not revolution2 -
It will be easy to change your name with HMRC https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-of-details
once you have confirmation that you have applied to change your name with HMRC you can send it to HMPO. Once they are happy that you are only using one name for all purposes they will be able to pass your application and send you for interview.0 -
But the OP seems to be digging their heels in against that idea.
It would be much simpler and quicker than going down the complaint route and maybe getting nowhere.1 -
Have to agree Sheramber. Simple solution being ignored !0

They've also not said if they declared the alternative name in the relevant section or not... clearly its going to be more suspicious if they were caught out rather than openly declared that they're known by another name0

Sorry I missed that post.Sandtree said:They've also not said if they declared the alternative name in the relevant section or not... clearly its going to be more suspicious if they were caught out rather than openly declared that they're known by another name
Yes it was because I filled in the section about being know by another name in the passed (I wished I hadn't now)0 -
You will be asked about previous names at your interview anyway. If your HMRC is in name B then your work knows you by that name as all your PAYE and. NI will be in name B. So you are using 2 identities and until you have you name aligned in all government departments you won’t get you passport issuedBulld0g said:
