KnownMaynard's post above should give pause. For folk who don't know one end of the boiler from the other, I think a service - regardless of warranty - should be carried out at regular intervals. How regular is up to individuals. Perhaps every 2 or 3 years?
I do know each end of a boiler, but was still puzzled by a funny little round plastic thingy sitting on a shelf in my boiler cupboard. It was crumbly and crumbling to the touch. Took some head scratching to ID it as the flue's test point cap. It had perished over the years, and its absence theoretically left the exhaust gases with a small path into the room. Thankfully the CO detector - installed inside the cupboard - confirmed there was no detectable leakage.
I have to 'fess that the fact that it had deteriorated to the point of crumbling and falling off without being noticed was due to me not having it serviced regularly. Mind you, it's had so many parts replaced under service contracts over the past decade, that it's a miracle that repair guys didn't notice it either - I guess flue gas tests aren't part of a 'wet' side repair?

I've a Potterton that's well over 20 years old; I don't get it serviced because it works as well as it ever has.  Like Jeepers I keep a CO detector in the cupboard housing.
