Getting credit back !!!

Hi have just received my  gas and electricity bills.  The electricity I pay quarterly and the gas I pay weekly.  I am £77.32 in credit with my gas, when I asked for it to be paid back they said "no they would only take the  amount off of my electric bill, not return it as such even though the electric is not due to be paid until  20th of May. Surely they can't keep my money like this ...???? Anyone else had this problem please.

Not seen this as a problem but depends upon what you pay for each .
20th May is only ten days away .

Odd to have managed to be £77 in credit for gas,as you pay that weekly, couldn't you just not have for however many number of weeks £77 would have accounted for, instead of continuing to pay it?.
What's in your T+C's regarding refund policies?.

@sallysam  I've come across fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, six monthly but not seen weekly before.  Is this a prepay meter and you topping up every week ?   If so to run the credit down can you not just top up less.?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Using a payment card for your energy bills

"You top up the payment card, either at a PayPoint or the Post Office, and make payments whenever you need to"

You are probably paying well over the odds if you are effectively on a standard tariff because you are topping up a card.  Try comparing tariffs (start with Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch', entering your annual kWh usage derived from actual meter readings) and to reconsider your method of payment.
Direct debit is usually the cheapest way to pay.  Separate suppliers may also be cheaper than dual fuel.
