New Video Tapes

I purchased a couple of VHS video tapes from Hmv and poundland but I everytime I tried to record something the tapes would screw up and become unuseable. i have tried two different machines. What am I doing wrong?

Fast forward the tape to the end then rewind it before 1st use. If that does not work then as the above poster said. Always buy branded taped like Memorex.0
