In 2013 we had a similar thought. Couldn't really find anything we liked to buy, so we added a 2 storey extension. Our house was absolutely beautiful inside. Then we had new neighbours who were VERY loud at night (think When Harry met Sally type screaming). Added to my son not getting the Primary school we liked and a few other niggles we ended up moving just over 3 years ago anyway. In our situation the extension was still worth it. We have kept our old house and rented it out, and being the only 4 bed in the area means it has been easy to get a tenant.
But if I was to go back to 2013, it would have been much easier just to move at the time!

Inconsiderate neighbours can also be just over the fence in a detached house. You may be able to stay within the sanctuary and close all the doors and windows but your quiet enjoyment of your garden cannot be assured.
I don't think that is the issue though. The OP said they have a good relationship with the neighbours just that there is noise transmission between the properties. Its nothing to do with inconsiderate neighbours.

IF you can restructure the house so the noise is more isolated(a room away) when you need it to be might be worth spending a bit.

What have others done with these properties, any pointers to getting money back from a future sale if it does not work for you.

You are trying to fix 2 problems which needs the disruption of a build the other probably can't be fixed.

If you can find a place that fixes both problems without a build by moving then that seems to be the better option overall.
