Job paid and completed Contractor chasing VAT

Hello
I had a Vat registered Ltd co do building work with all written quotes etc etc. Final invoice was sent and settled once the job was completed.
A month later (after they have rectified a few hick ups) they have said they made a mistake their side by not charging VAT on one stage of the payments and I owe them £500 VAT - which they say they have paid out last quarter.
I have asked several times for proof and VAT invoice which they have quite aggressively said they will not provide it until I pay the outstanding VAT.
What do you lovely MSE'er think is the best course of action as far as I can see the final invoice had been settled and a month later this happens

Well, you would deduct their VAT from any amount you have due to pay.(Typically invoices state E&OE.)However, you would only pay against an invoice and it would be thus reasonable to expect the amended one.(And, of course, their invoice would include their VAT number.)0

Does the amount you have paid match the quote or is it £500 less ? If they are VAT reg then everything they have charged you is inclusive of VAT, you may well owe them £500 but that technically isn't all VAT0
