Underneath it says: (dd-mm-yyyy) So I put my date of birth like that without the dashes.

Sometimes some companies like to confirm your date of birth, to make sure you are old enough to enter (this competition is for UK residents, that are 18 years or older.) 
Some companies will use your date of birth for research purposes, to see what sort of people are interested in their products, which is also why some ask your gender.
