I am in credit with my Gas/Electric supplier for more than one month's Direct Debit (D/D) payment and have asked for a refund.  However, the company now tells me that I have to be in credit for two months before entitled to a refund.  Is the correct?

    Which supplier?
There are quite a few that require you to hold a month in credit so they may be correct.
Also consider if you have a bill due to be deducted before your next DD is due to be collected...
