Adding a van as second vehicle

Options
Hi all.
I currently have a car insured by Hastings Direct and the policy only has until 23rd June to run.
This weekend I am picking up a used van (private sale) for social use so was hoping that I could add it to my existing policy, just for the remaining <2 months.
I called and they advised that they cannot add a car and a van to the same policy.
Of course, I could go and take out cover, either with them or someone else for 12 months on the van separately but the the downsides to that are:
  1. I then have two policies out of sync, instead of just managing one
  2. There will definitely be no multicar discount
Any advice or suggestions as to what my options are?*
*I appreciate that this is a money saving forum but, for now I want to keep both vehicles so this is purely about insurance
I wouldn't be able to go for a multicar policy elsewhere, starting on Sunday, would I? That would effectively double insure my car.

The issue you'll have with most providers is you want a multi car policy for 2 vehicles, 1 of which isn't a car...

What sort of van is it? If its a car derived van like a Corsa or Astra then some insurers will be willing to consider it under a car policy. If its a Transit or such then they'll say it has to go on a van policy

Insurer may question the use of a van for social use only.

Pretty standard in my experience. A van is a van is a van, and if it's not a car (which it isn't, because it's a van) the vast majority of insurers will not insure it on a car policy. Because it's not a car. It's a van.

So you need a van policy, separate from your car policy.

You think this is silly, or doesn't make sense to you? The insurers are not bothered. Move on and find a van policy. Or buy an old Volvo estate.
