As Westin said, room prices vary across the year, this might be due to seasonal fluctuations or local events taking place in the vicinity that would affect the room occupancy which in turn affects the price, check room prices a month either side of your preferred date to see prices, that might give you some idea as to whether the prices have risen in general.
If the room rates are unacceptable to you then i doubt the hotel has a leg to stand on as they cancelled not you, and you should be due a full refund
