Prepayment to standard conversion

My sister is moving in to a new (for her) house on Saturday.

She has only just discovered that the meters are prepay, her conveyancer should have picked this up ?

She, obviously wants to get on to a standard meter

I assume that she will need to do this change at a later date and will have to choose a supplier (Octopus ?) – she was told, incorrectly, that there is a charge to convert from prepay to standard

Nothing to to do with the conveyancer - he/she would not have visited the property but your sister did.

Has your sister been given details of the supplier ? She MUST contact them when she moves in to ensure she does not pay for any debt from the present tenant.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Many companies charge some don't, she needs to enquire before just signing up to any of them.

As already stated by ROBIN9, she must contact the current supplier immediately to register with them and get Top-Cards in her own name.
If that supplier is Brit Gas, she should be aware they are overly strict on changes from Paygo meters to a Standard meters - So strict that even HM Queen would probably have trouble with their credit checks, whilst EDF and others are much more relaxed.

As for costs, if her current meters are not Smart meters, then suppliers will be keen to change them as they have quotas to fill for fitting Smart meters and will likely do it for free - Ask before signing up
  • The house is under SSE - who are extremely difficult to contact
My sister was on hold for 60 minutes, yesterday and got cut off the moment someone answered
She has triied their "Call Back" system with no luck
She has tweeted them this morning and is waiting

  • OK -  She already has prepayment Smart Meters - They can change/update a prepayment smart meter to a credit meter - remotely !
    I never knew that..

Yes smart PAYG it switched off and meter is reconfigured to work in credit mode.
If it wasn’t a Smart PAYG meter then they would have had to physically change the meter.
